PCP is also prevalent in other immunocompromised patient populations, such as organ transplant recipients. Transplant surgeries require recipients to take regimens of anti-rejection drugs that suppress the immune system in order to facilitate the survival of the transplanted organ. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, approximately 28,000 organ transplants were performed in 2008. Of this population, an overall incidence of PCP in solid organ transplant recipients not using PCP prophylaxis was 5-7%, with the highest incidence occurring in liver, heart, and lung transplants.
